Museums
The museums went to all seemed to have quality management. All the staff was very helpful and cared about experience. They were always happy to give more information on anything we were learning about. They were also friendly and talked with us about our travels. The shops and cafes in museums were staffed well and even when things were crowded lines didn't take too long. I think they did a good job eliminating bottle necks and making things efficient.
Hospital
I went with Nikki to the hospital in London to get an inhaler prescription. The management there was sub par. Obviously it's because health care is free there but you could tell because the management style was set up so they didn't care how long you waited or how good your experience was. They were just doing what they had to.
Restaurants
I noticed the restaurants in the UK were had a management style more laid back than in America. They weren't as pushy for you to finish eating and leave. They didn't mind if you were done and sat there talking for a while. That shows that the management cares about the customers more. In America it's all about turning tables to get the next check through as soon as possible.
Gas Stations
I noticed some gas stations in Oxford were just out of gas and I've never seen that in the U.S. I think there is a difference in management thought there. They are fine with turning away customers instead of having excess gas on hand. I'm sure they normally have just enough to barely get to the next shipment to save costs.
Hostels
The hostel we went to in Dublin had some good management. I could tell the desk was very organized they were nice and clean and knew how to treat customers and make sure we had what we needed. I'm sure management there makes sure everyone is friendly and knowledgable since they work with tourist constantly. If there was a problem they took care of it quickly and professionally.
ADM
It was very interesting to see how flour and oil is made today. Flour is such a simple thing that has had the same simple steps for hundreds of years. What their management does now to be competitive is make processes more efficient and work on quality control. In both areas, working with food means management puts a big emphasis on cleanliness.
Clinipace
This is a company that is growing globally extremely quickly and I'm sure the management is scrambling to figure out how to deal with a changing company. As they grow they constantly have to adapt to new issues. Their management must have to constantly reevaluate structure and what employees they need and don't need.
Lloyds Bank
Lloyds Bank visit seemed to be chill but professional and I really liked that. They seemed like everyone had a strong understanding of their role and how it fit with others. I think the management style is one that takes care of their employees and makes sure they know what they are doing. I also think they have a good management that teaches good customer service qualities. A bank needs to have good customer service and they instill it in their employees well.
BBC
It was difficult to get a feel of how BBC runs its business since our visit was a tour and not a meeting. But I think it's a serious and professional style since they are a major media company that is pretty publicly know worldwide. They are in the TV business so the overall goal of the business is to get viewers so everyone is focused on grabbing people's attention. I'm sure there is management pressure to fine juicy stories for the news or push whatever people like more than what's important.
Deloitte
Deloitte seemed to be a huge company that probably has a big hierarchy. If you start at the bottom of the pole there, I'm sure you're far from communication with the heads of the company. This type of business requires a management style that is very organized and implements universal practices. From the visit I got the impression that they work their employees pretty hard being the big company they are. I feel like the management style probably encouraged less of a social life and more focus on work.
